James Dodd and Godfrey Emsworth have been close mates in the Boer War. Godfrey goes missing after getting hit by a bullet and his friend hears no more of him. After returning home, Dodd asks his friend’s father what is up with Godfrey and is told that Godfrey has gone on a voyage around the world. Dissatisfied with this explanation and determined to find out his friend’s true fate, Dodd invites himself to the family home. During his stay, he accidentally happens to see Godfrey staring at him through his window and tries to pursue him when he flees the scene. Puzzled and bewildered by the hostile attitude of Colonel Emsworth and his friend’s strange demeanor, Dodd recruits Sherlock Holmes’ help as he is sure that something is wrong with the whole set up.
