A horoscope is an astrological chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth. The word horoscope is derived from Greek words meaning "a look at the hours" (horoskopos, pl. horoskopoi, or "marker(s) of the hour.") Other commonly used names for the horoscope in English include astrological chart, astro-chart, celestial map, sky-map, star-chart, cosmogram, vitasphere, radical chart, radix, chart wheel, or simply chart. It is used as a method of divination regarding events relating to the point in time it represents, and it forms the basis of the horoscopic traditions of astrology.

In common usage, horoscope often refers to an astrologer's interpretation, usually based on a system of Sun sign astrology; or on the calendar significance of an event, as in Chinese astrology. In particular, many newspapers and magazines carry predictive columns based on celestial influences in relation to the zodiacal placement of the Sun on the day of a person's birth, identifying the individual's Sun sign or "star sign" based on the tropical zodiac.

The zodiac, or "circle of animals" is a zone or belt in space projected onto the celestial sphere through which, from our viewpoint, the planets move. A symbolic geometric construction around 15 to 18 degrees wide, it is divided into 12 signs, each of 30 degrees longitude (making 360 degrees in all), with the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun, as its middle line.

Aries {March 20 to April 20} (♈) /ˈɛəriːz/ (meaning "ram") is the first astrological sign in the Zodiac, spanning the first 30 degrees of celestial longitude (0°≤ λ <30º).

Taurus {April 20 to May 21} is the second astrological sign in the Zodiac. It spans the 30-60th degree of the zodiac, between 27.25 and 54.75 degree of celestial longitude.

Gemini {May 21 to June 21} (pronunciation: /ˈdʒɛmɪnaɪ/ or /ˈdʒɛmɪniː/ jem-in-eye or jem-in-ee) is the third astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Gemini.

Cancer {June 21 to July 23} is the fourth astrological sign, which is associated with the constellation Cancer.

Leo {July 23 to August 23} is the fifth astrological sign of the zodiac, originating from the constellation of Leo.

Virgo {August 23 to Sept. 23} is the sixth astrological sign in the Zodiac. Virgo is the second-largest constellation.

Libra {Sept. 23 to October 23} is the seventh astrological sign in the Zodiac.

Scorpio {October 23 to Nov. 22} (Greek: Σκορπιός, Skorpios; Latin: Scorpius) is the eighth astrological sign in the Zodiac.

Sagittarius {Nov. 22 to Dec. 22} (Greek: Τοξότης, "Toxotes", Latin: "Sagittarius") is the ninth astrological sign, which is associated with the constellation Sagittarius.

Capricorn {Dec. 22 to January 20} is the tenth astrological sign in the zodiac, originating from the constellation of Capricornus.

Aquarius {January 20 to Feb. 18} (Greek: Ύδροχόος, "Hudrokhoös", Latin: "Aquārius") is the eleventh astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation Aquarius.

Pisces {Feb. 18 to March 20} is the twelfth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the Pisces constellation.
