wordlegs was thought up to offer literature to younger Irish readers by young and emerging writers. Wordlegs offers high standard short stories, poetry and other forms to an audience that is discovering literature in a new format – online. Though we do accept work from all writers, it is accepted in the interest of targeting Millennial readers.
The main objective of wordlegs is to bring an audience of young Irish people back to literature by using the medium they are most comfortable with.
The first issue was uploaded in late January, 2010. It was edited by co-founder Elizabeth Reapy and consists of 4 short stories, 5 poems, 2 non-fiction pieces, 2 flash and a 1 act play. She initially wanted to collect short stories by young Irish writers and publish them that way, hoping to hit on the target audience she is in. With much discussion and research later, along with Facebookers getting "Killing in the Name Of" to Christmas Number 1 in the UK, she decided to use a much more powerful tool to reach out to her age group - the internet. This made more sense. She spends loads of hours of her own days browsing as she writes. With the help of the very talented Cathal Sherlock and two days of name brainstorming, wordlegs domain was purchased and talk of the project spread throughout the land.
The response was phenomenal. Subscription rates and visits to the site soared as did confidence in the project. Each issue receives on average, one hundred and twenty pieces of work to choose from and receives approximately four thousand site visitors. Though with each issue, the submissions and visitors become more numerous. We try to pick an eclectic mix of styles that reflect modern and experimental literature.
Issue 3 marked an important point in our evolution with a combination of music and lyrics, making us ponder about the interconnection of other art forms with word. We will be developing this further with more artistic collaborations in the future.
