儒道二旨同歸殊塗。以教言則異;以道言則同。老子,聖人也;孔子,亦聖人也。其所聞道,亦同出也。老子輕世重身,獨安清淨,故其為道日損;孔子用世存心,砥礪德行,故其為道日益。然損者反求諸內,此悟性道之易也;益者崇尚其功,此立德之宏也。而為教者,宜其益也。故儒適日用,人樂服從,而視道為高深,為隱僻也。惟欲知本源,必明虛靜;欲求功行,必達仁義。二者終無異也。

故孔子之徒述中庸之言,紹脩道之教,以傳先聖易禮之義。即孔子問道老子之意也。後人乃爭二者之異同,徒見其無解於道,並無解於老、孔之學也。修道也者,不可有儒、道之分。推而言之,凡以道教者均無可分,此解道者所同知也。故《中庸》之書,誠不異《道德》之言;而孔氏之傳,誠不殊老子之教也。

夫道不可以他學藝比。精一虛靜,然後得日損其行,至於無為,而道乃見,而脩乃成。故老子有「有,欲觀竅;無,欲觀妙」之語也。「有」者為「無」所生;「無」者為「有」所成。而言有者,欲其有所觀於竅,其《中庸》「致曲」之義也;言無者,欲其觀於妙,其《大學》「止至善」之義也。
