“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is a short story by American author “Washington Irwing” written while he was living abroad in Birmingham, England. It was first published in 1820. The story itself is set in 1790 in the countryside of Tarry Town, north of New York, in a secluded narrow valley called Sleepy Hollow.
The valley is renowned for its haunting atmosphere, and stories of supernatural that pervade the imagination of its inhabitants. Sleepy Hollow’s most famous legend is that of the Headless Horseman; the ghost of a Hessian soldier whose head was shot off by a cannon ball during a battle in the American Revolution.
