The BMA (British Medical Association) is the trade union and professional association representing doctors and medical students throughout the United Kingdom at national, regional and local level. We seek to guide doctors throughout all stages of their career through health service changes, technological advancements, cultural shifts and economic pressures.
Our policies are determined by doctors in local, regional and national forums which send motions to the Representative Body (RB), our main policy-making body.
The Representative Body is made up of 560 doctors from all parts of the medical profession in the United Kingdom. These doctors come together at the four day Annual Representative Meeting (ARM) to debate and vote on over 600 motions on a wide range of professional, ethical and medico-political issues. These resolutions relate to all areas of health and health care, from smoking, seat belt legislation, and consent to treatment, through to hospital bed numbers and doctors’ hours of work. Also at this meeting, new Officers are elected, income and expenditure accounts are considered, and reports are received from committees and branch of practice conferences e.g. consultants, juniors, general practitioners. The meeting attracts extensive press coverage from both specialist and national media alike.
