Godaan, a narrative of stark realism, is Premchand's most outstanding novel. Artistry, the realism and tenderness with which he's created the characters here, especially that of Hori, are unparalleled and unsurpassed in the whole fiction novels of India. Hori is an immortal character emblematic of the peasantry of this nation.
It is regarded as among the best Hindustani novels of contemporary Indian literature and was printed in 1936. Themed round the socio economic loss in addition to the exploitation of the hamlet poor, the novel was Premchand's last complete novel.
The storyline revolves around many characters representing the different parts of Indian community. Rural society and the peasant is signified by Hori Mahato's family and his family members which contains Sona, Rupa and Dhania (daughters), Gobar (son), Jhunia (daughter in law). The Story begins from a stage where Hori has a profound want of getting a cow as other millions.
