The events of the novel take place about the middle of XVIII-th century (in the log contains the date Bones 1745). They begin in England in a small tavern "Admiral Benbow". The story is told from the first-person protagonist, the son of a tavern hostess - a young Jim Hawkins (with the exception of three chapters, where the events described by Dr. Livesey).

Once in a restaurant, a new lodger - a former sailor, whose name is Billy Bones. To him a strange start to come visit. The first, also a sailor, nicknamed "Black Dog", something like from Billy, they quarreled and ended, and stabbing wounds. Billy attends a terrible blind beggar, who gave him a black mark - a formidable pirate leader warning that violate the interests of the team. Billy's got a label decides to hastily leave their place, but died suddenly of apoplexy. Jim and his mother, whom Billy owes money to stay, search the dead sailor and his belongings. At the bottom of his chest, they find the money and a package of papers. From these papers it is clear that Bones was the first navigator on board the famous pirate Flint and had a map of the location where you stored the treasures of his well-known.

Jim barely had time to pick up the paper from under the nose Flint Blind Pew and his thugs, who attack the tavern "Admiral Benbow" in order to take possession of the card. Bones, Black Dog, Blind Pew and others - all former members of the team, "the Walrus," a pirate ship of Captain Flint. Suddenly, to help Jim and his mother came a detachment of the royal customs. Blind Pew tragically killed, and the other pirates hastily flee - they are the successful withdrawal of the team covers the pirate lugger, which are their accomplices.

Jim sends the documents and a map to Dr. Livesey and the squire Trelawney. Wealthy Trelawney begins preparation of the expedition, and requests Blendli errand to equip the expedition a suitable vessel - the schooner "Hispaniola."
